NEW DELHI: Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Maulana Mahmood Madani on Sunday strongly condemned the mob lynching of Hindu man Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh, describing the killing as “shameful” and in complete violation of Islamic teachings, while warning that rising extremism across the subcontinent must be urgently curbed.

Reacting to the brutal killing, Madani said acts of mob violence had no place in a civilised society and could not be justified under any circumstances. “This is very shameful. When Muslims do such things, we hang our heads in shame, and this cannot be condemned enough,” he said.

Emphasising the rule of law, Madani said no individual or group had the right to take another person’s life. “Firstly, no one in a civilised society should have the right to kill another human being. No matter how wrong someone has acted, there is a process for punishment, and that process should be followed,” he said.

He said the crime became even more grievous if the perpetrators were from one community and the victim from another. “If the perpetrators are Muslims and the victim is a non-Muslim, then the crime becomes even more heinous.”
