SRINAGAR: The people living in and around Nowgam have raised concerns regarding road safety management across the valley, urging authorities to prioritise smoother traffic flow and reinforce safety measures on all three highways, particularly the vital Bypass-Nowgam route.
Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the locals voiced their concern for the safety management of flyovers in Srinagar, including Nowgam-Bypass and others.
Saleem, a local of Nowgam said, “There are many death traps on the Nowgam-Bypass flyover, and authorities must take note of it. There should be designated pedestrian pathways as the lack of safety measures causes discomfort and fear among pedestrians using the flyover.”
When contacted, the chief executive of Roads and Buildings (R&B), Sajad Ahmad Naqeeb told KNO that their primary objective is to ensure the safety of commuters and vehicles traversing these crucial highways. “Strengthening bridges along these routes is a key step towards achieving this goal,” he said.
Locals said the Bypass-Nowgam route serves as a critical artery connecting various regions, and ensuring its structural integrity is paramount for the safety of commuters.
Regarding the accident that happened near the flyover, Naqeeb said he has personally visited the accident spot, and it has come to notice that it happened due to overspeeding and wrong lane driving.
“We have geared up the security arrangements on flyovers and have taken note of the matter to prevent further accidents in the future,” he added.
The officials from the R&B Department, who are leading the construction work on flyovers, said, “We have ramped up the work and requested people to have patience. We will commence the macadamisation of Sanat Nagar road in the coming week and ensure the timely completion of the remaining flyovers.”
