Ex-Director and Ex-Chairperson BOG were Special Invitees

SRINAGAR: The 5-day Short-term course titled “Journey of semiconductor Physics to smart devices to intelligent automation” concluded at Department of Physics at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar.

The STC program consists of talks by eminent speakers in the field of semiconductors and has received around 350 registrations. HoD Physics Prof M A Shah was the chairperson of the five-day-long scientific event.

The valedictory was presided over by Director NIT Srinagar (Dr.) Prof. Rakesh Sehgal. While Dr. M J Zarabi, Ex-Chairperson BOG NIT Srinagar, and Prof A M Wani, Ex-Director NIT Srinagar were special invitees on the occasion.

Director NIT Srinagar, Prof Sehgal welcomed both the dignitaries after their brief address to participants. He informed participants about the significance of semiconductors in the modern world and present urgency of innovation in this field.

Prof. Sehgal also appreciated the physics department faculty for taking these initiatives to educate the youth about the importance of semiconductors devices.

In his message, Institute’s Registrar Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari said over the past few years, significant research efforts have been devoted to improving the efficiencies of semiconductor materials across the globe.

He said the course was aimed to touch various aspects of the growing technology including working principles of semiconductors, the latest advances, and future devices.

“NIT Srinagar will be conducting such events in the future also,” Prof. Bukhari said.

On the 5th day of the Course, Prof. Shobhna Shukla from IIT Bombay delivered his lecture on “Methods of Microscale and Nanoscale Patterning for Semiconductors”.

He presented his research in the field of Nanoscale Photonics and Devices. The session ended with appreciation to speaker Dr. Shobhna.

The valedictory session was solemnized in presence of Dr. M J Zarabi, Ex-Chairperson of BOG NIT Srinagar, and Prof A M Wani, Ex-Director NIT Srinagar.

Both speakers appreciated the efforts of NIT Srinagar and hoped that it will continue to touch the skies in near future. The response to the session was very positive.

The winners of the Quiz cum worksheet test were also announced which was topped by Reba Ashraf, B Tech Ist Semester Student.

A vote of thanks was presented by Prof Gausia Qazi, Department of Electronics and Communication. The proceedings of the course were carried out by Miss Sabba Nawaz and Mr. Asif Majeed.

Earlier, during the inaugural session, Prof M A Shah, HoD Physics made it clear to the participants the objectives of organizing such events in emerging areas and thanked his colleagues for their kind cooperation.

“Two-Dimensional Semiconductor Materials: Graphene and Beyond” was delivered by Prof Farhan Rana from Cornel University, USA. The talk was informative and inspiring and was appreciated by the participants including the faculty.

Prof. Gousia introduced Prof Farhan Rana, an eminent faculty from Cornell University. He highlighted the importance of two-dimensional materials like Graphene which have multiple applications in our day-to-day life.

The talk ended with an emphasis on the importance of 2D semiconducting material. Followed by the talk, a question and answer session was held and a number of queries were answered by the speaker.

On the 2nd day, Prof. M. A. Shah, HOD Physics, delivered his lecture was “Semiconductors in Nano Dimensions”. Prof. Shah’s lecture emphasized the fundamentals of research in semiconductors in low dimensions.

His lecture was followed by a vibrant question and answer session where students get their queries answered by Prof. Shah.

Later, the students were engaged by Roomal,  Ph.D. student of the department through a worksheet on semiconductors.

Students were asked to submit responses through Google Forms. Prof. Shah graciously agreed to facilitate the top three scorers.

On Day 3, Prof. Bikas Das, IISER Thiruvananthapuram presented a lecture titled “Embracing The Dazzling Organic Electronics”.

Prof. Das explained the usefulness of organic material which can be semiconducting and hence could be used as potential candidates in electronic devices.

Later tutorial sheet was conducted by Alim, Ph.D. student of Physics Department. The responses from the participants were also collected.

On the 4th day, the inaugural lecture was  Dr. Rakesh Kumar from the University of Manchester on “Semiconducting sensors”.

Dr. Kumar has expertise in the field of semiconducting sensors, biosensors, etc. He emphasized on the significance of semiconducting sensors in resolving modern-day problems.

A vibrant question-and-answer session was held followed by his talk where the speaker answered all the queries of the participants. A quiz was later organized by Prof. Seemin Rubab, NIT Srinagar. The responses were later connected through Google Sheets.
