PAMPORE: Police on Monday refuted the fake news about a possible militant attack in south Kashmir’s Pampore area.
SP Awantipora Mohammad Zahid Malik told Greater Kashmir that some people on social media including Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp groups have posted fake news about a firing incident in Pampore.
SP said that no such incident took place in Pampore Township on Monday and the news about the incident is baseless.
The action will be initiated against rumor mongers, he warned.
Meanwhile, police said it has taken cognizance of the matter when it observed that tweet amounts to an offence under the law.
A Kashmiri Hindu Sushil Pandit has posted wrong information about the killing of five CRPF troopers in Pampore.
Pandit in his tweet had also questioned the Ramadhan ceasefire. “We have taken a serious note of this tweet and investigation has been set into motion,” said an official.
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah had also demanded an action against the Pandit over the fake news.
“Given that NO ONE else has this “news,” I think it’s safe to assume this is fake news spread with a malicious intent, the subtext being Muslim terrorists have killed Hindu CRPF jawans. These sorts of blatant lies must face legal action,” Omar tweeted.
